Where we began
The Tavern began in Little Ripley Shop in Irvine.
Before The Tavern became a formal organisation, it was already a community. It was the tables we gathered around, the games we played, the models we built and painted, the stories we told, and the friendships that grew there.
Little Ripley gave The Tavern its first home. It gave people somewhere to meet, play, talk, laugh, and belong. For many of us, it became part of our routine, our social lives, and our support network.
We are grateful for the role Little Ripley Shop played in giving The Tavern a place to begin. Even the tagline in our logo is a small salute to Little Ripley’s owner, a huge Alien fan, and a reminder of where we began.
Keeping The Tavern alive
When circumstances changed, The Tavern could have faded away with the loss of its original home.
Instead, the community chose to keep it alive.
Members came together to carry The Tavern forward, not just as a regular gathering, but as a properly organised community group. We formed The Tavern as an organisation so the community could continue, grow, and have a future beyond any single venue, table, or campaign.
That decision was about more than keeping games running. It was about protecting the friendships, routines, creativity, and sense of belonging that had built up over time.
What The Tavern means
The Tavern is more than a name.
In stories, games, and adventures, the tavern is often where people gather before the journey begins. It is where strangers become parties, plans are made, stories are told, and weary travellers find warmth, welcome, and rest.
That is what we want The Tavern to be.
A place to gather.
A place to belong.
A place to return to.
The lantern is part of that meaning. It represents guidance, welcome, and hope. Whatever path people are on, the lantern always lights the way home.
Becoming an organisation
The Tavern was developed into a broader tabletop and model community for Ayrshire.
Rather than being tied to a single game, system, shop, venue, or group, The Tavern exists to support roleplaying games, board games, wargames, card games, miniature painting, model hobbying, dry bar events, and community activities.
Our aim is to provide a welcoming, organised, and safe space where people can meet, create, play, and belong.
Built by the community
The Tavern is volunteer-led. It has been built by people giving their time, energy, skills, and care because they believe the community is worth protecting.
From organising sessions and helping new players, to preparing documents, finding venues, managing equipment, running games, and keeping people informed, The Tavern exists because members stepped forward and chose to keep the light burning.
We are still at the beginning of this next chapter, but the foundation is strong: friendship, creativity, inclusion, responsibility, and a shared love of tabletop and model hobbies.
Looking forward
The Tavern is working to grow into a stable community organisation that can support regular sessions, special events, campaigns, hobby days, social activities, and future opportunities.
We know that building something lasting takes time. It is a road walked in small steps, not rushed strides. Each step matters, and we are trying to take those steps with care, learning from where we have been and thinking carefully about where we go next.
This journey belongs to the community, and we walk it together with the lantern held high.
Our history is not just about where we came from. It is about the people who kept showing up, the tables we gathered around, the stories we shared, and the decision to carry that community forward.
The Tavern exists because the community mattered.
And wherever the road leads next, the lantern will always light the way home.
